Dan Curhan This, to me, is archetypal progressive death metal. It's got plenty of dynamics, lots of time signature experimentation, great melodies, great riffs, death metal vocals, bouts of blackened fury, all in a super refined and palatable package. The songwriting is effective and grandiose, with meandering structures and a wide variety of feelings. This release is massive, and will take some time to fully digest. I'm here for it.

The Chain 06:40
We have bled, we have slaved Yet a labor fruitless it gave A once fertile mother deprived of essence A veritable garden of Eden Now a husk, ripe for discardment Billions of futures spent To feed the privileged few But the tyrants force no growth With our blood upon the sands We shall build a craft for our escape Forge a salvation for our race For down here we have nothing left Only empty space for an escape Escape! To breathe life to their accomplishment, They manned the vessel with knowledge And the souls to grant vitality To the cold intergalactic metal beast While few oppose the restless craft Forced by a demand, A final master plan In eminent need for a surrogate We build the ark to outlive The black tide of future A Future... Cold... We shall build a craft for our escape Forge a salvation for our race For down here we have nothing left Only empty promises of an escape There is a fatal flaw in this system, Uncontrolled by the composers, The saboteur hides among our ranks! Hidden among our ranks...

Departure 07:06
And then one day it was to take place Though not the way anyone would have predicted Not in the form of cataclysmic fire But the absence of the very essence of its burning force Dissipate! Across the starry heavens Cold, as hell... Sixty million and eight The lengths of mercy They go unseen We witness too late that Light hides a darker shade Nothing travels across the vast space Gaping black jaws tighten their frozen bite From birth raised to never look up "It will burn your sight" Too clear and bright it shines The beautiful dream ending in insight What will become of life without light? Without a warning to some the last day would call forth the final night And the other half less fortunate, It would never beget a dawn
3.
Abandoned 07:07
We were betrayed! Tied to the ground by morally binding chains Collateral for the only cause Genocide to counter extinction We are the leftovers, Scraps and shards of a divided whole Separated by sheer will to survive, To kill "If nothing is lost, nothing is gained" The lesson we once believed "The power is ours, the power to leave" We’re breaking the chain... No longer forced down by gravity Free to leave, leave us behind A stairway of corpses, towards the sky Were we betrayed? Forcefully grounded, insignificant by necessity A stepping stone for survival Continuation at the cost of humanity Holding on to what little life we have left Crazed and panicked frightened rats Unable to abandon our spherical ship Lost out on a shoreless ocean of empty motion Slowly crushed under infinite waves of ice.... We believed there was a way Trusted the few who said they knew how Comfortably oblivious of the consequences, The sacrifices we were forced to make Willingly following our fraudulent call, Without guiding stars, alone in the dark On a derelict orb as temperature continues to fall To fall... We were Betrayed! On a desolate corpse forsaken and cast away Sacrificed for a chance to repeat everything The missing links of a broken chain
4.
Succession 07:57
A heavy burden Aiming to sever the ties of cause Assuring a righteous dawn To be conceived in strife and war He trudges on promulgating the fall of the successions in place With a resolution to re-assemble the balance of power A rift forming into the vacuum Choices made, sides taken Equilibrium starting to break The scales tipping towards confrontation Eventually we crowned the traitors as kings, A lineage of renewal with a frail but crucial peace But no amount of novelty could sustain Our most basic of necesseties, The innate state creating the compulsive need to be His fighting spirits broken after prolonged languish A succession that broke the proportions ingrained Society diminished from unending conflict A succession that broke symmetries of life What have I done? For beneath wounds inflicted in vain our future writhes enchained And the dawn seems so distant now Yet forward is the only road, the only way on A Heavy burden To renew the chains cast away To re-establish what once was broken Bringing end to strife and war Continuation of the arduous trial assured, By the institution of laws forged by the saboteur By the saboteur

Desolation 06:51
Untold years, no one remembers Revealing the lost is ice Covering towers and mountains alike Silently sleeping, the surface dead Frozen roots creep... Discovering depths beneath, Concealed surfaces Preserved state of memories Adrift in orbitless desolation

And so it came to be I am the product of a dying dream Long gone, never to be seen Our light devoid of vitality This endeavour could not last forever For the end I wait alone Isolation, desperation Generations have passed, No one remains to remember, No witnesses remain to our failure faded into the distant past I, the daughter of those who stood above, The last testament to everything our ideals have atrophied and now alone in Desperation, a realization Even in the screaming void an answer can be found The reason I still seek And so it came to be A hope born from a dying dream Future entwined with the past A brilliant light burning with vigor unsurpassed A shift in perception that restructures reality Embrace the actuality as one and as a whole With renewed eyes see it for the first time the world and the purpose within your mind Forever as a point in the sequence Eternal as a part of the universe For as variables in an ever-repeating system We exist within the Isochron This is our wisdom This is who we were Chronicled and compiled in to a timeless tale This is our story This is our Progeny And now with my purpose fulfilled, I can finally sleep

Isochron 09:40
Blazing brilliant evening-star Igniting in the mesosphere Perpetual flight into falling Goddess descends and crashes A perpetual dive into the divide The shared progression deeper within, Where eventually all frequencies disperse Into a singular silent wave Converge, Eventually all coalesces in to one Diverge, The whole, branching out from a single point Lines dissolve, the scale becomes clear The circular patterns of life revealed The value of all things perceived, Colored in hues of primal primacy Concepts comprised of ever-growing concepts Exponentially expanding, eventually encompassing everything Converging, forever approaching a final line Diverging, The grandeur transforming into a stillness In a world of motionless waves where Permanence is given structure by time The universal process is conceptualized, Undone, to be fathomed by the mind And our deficiencies, meant nothing And nothing becomes everything Coded within is all knowledge and memory A chronicled and compiled complete history Wherein desolation followed from fallacy Successive repetitions and compulsive falsities Is every part, every instanced phase Yet while standing atop its crest Completely without direction, Even while in chains, I’m unrestrained

about

ISOCHRON, the third offering from the Finnish progressive death metal act Denominate, is massive in ambition and proportion alike. The Finns hone their sound and style in to a razor sharp point, delivering a precise offering in both technique and composition with emotion ranging from the soul crushingly heavy to soaring melodic heights.

The story of the album takes the listener on a journey spanning millenniums, exploring themes about the nature of the universe and the morality of actions taken in an uncaring world.
